Megan Wagners photographs take you into a fantasy world where photographic detail slips between reality and dream; where the mundane and banal are infiltrated by the striking and strange. The compositions lead you on a journey through elegant lines and intimate textures that fade from abstract design into photo-realistic imagery. From simple yet mysterious graphics to intricate detailed patterns a viewer can easily lose themselves in any of the various works. Including a portrait mini-series which comments on the societal norms, the show ranges from grayscale images to colors so bold its as if they are being experienced for the first time. The large glossy prints hang free of constricting frames as to expand through an imaginary world with no pre-established boundaries.

Community Protest!!

Community Protest (Friday at 5PM) in Response to ICE Raid in Richmond.

Activists and organizers from the Virginia Immigrant People's Coalition (VIPC) will be holding an emergency protest on Friday, May 9, 2008 at 5:00pm (please note revised time), against the immigration raid that occurred at the federal courthouse. The protest will be located at 7th and Broad St. the site of the raid.
Rachel Mehl, a Richmond resident and member of the VIPC said "the only crime these immigrants have committed is working to support their family."
Jeff Winder, an organizer with the People United, a member organization of the VIPC said "a militarized border and society does not make us safe; our safety will come when the vast disparities of wealth and power represented by trade policies like NAFTA are eliminated.
The raid occurred in the morning on Wednesday, May 9. Federal immigration officials raided the construction site for the new federal courthouse in downtown Richmond and arrested 33 workers on immigration violations. The workers were temporarily locked up in courthouse cells they had just finished constructing.
The Virginia Immigrant Peoples Coalition is a statewide network of individuals and organizations that fight for the rights of immigrants. The coalition focuses on grassroots organizing to empower communities to join the struggle for justice. The VIPC will have volunteers at the Hispanic Liaison (804) 646-0145 office all day on Thursday, May 8, in order to help families and friends of the arrested take steps to recover from the attack on the community.
On Friday, May 9th from 7-9 pm, Chop Suey Books will host an opening reception for thINK, an art exhibition featuring the letter-pressed publication of the poetry journal thINK. Published at the Bowe House Press at VCU, thINK is an effort to reintroduce the letterpress as both a vital communication medium and a vibrant art form. The first issue is dedicated to a collaboration of local, nationally, and internationally recognized poets with students from the Graphic Design program at VCU.

In following with this collaboration, we will also host a reading by featured poets from the premiere issue. This reading will take place during the hours of the opening and will be held in the upstairs gallery.

This opening/reading is free and open to the public.
